Victor hockey foes see
‘Double’
Goalie Katie Double
helped lead a Victor hockey turnaround this season.
A season that started slowly for
the Victor hockey team finished memorably. And standing right in the
middle of the comeback was the Blue Devils’ starting goalie, senior Katie
Double, who has been a big part of the program since she was a freshman.
The Blue Devils opened the season with just one win in their
first eight games in the tough Monroe County North-South division, but they
hung in there, continued to work hard and steadily turned things around.
They ended their season with a strong postseason run that took them all the
way to the Section 5 Class B championship game.
Even though Victor lost in that title game to McQuaid, turning a 1-8 start
into an 8-12-2 season was quite an accomplishment for coach Mike Ferreri’s
team.
To those in Double’s tight circle of family and friends, it
came as no surprise that she would be involved in such a turnaround. She has
spent her whole life turning things around. The daughter of Bob and
Linda Double now spends much of her time out of class and away from hockey,
working at an internship in special education classrooms for teacher Mary
Lally-Duel in the Victor Primary building. Double has more than
just a passing interest in helping out with the special education classes.
“I like it because I want the kids to be successful,” she said. “I can
relate to them because I had learning disability problems. I had to learn
how to deal with the same problems these kids are dealing with. I want to be
there for them. It’s what I want to do, to be a special education elementary
teacher. I want to be the one to make the difference for these kids, just
like the fourth- and fifth-grade teachers that made the difference for me.”
Double’s learning disabilities were not discovered until she was about 5 or
6. “I was fine until about the second grade,” she said. “Once we
started to get to reading and things like that, it was then that everybody
started seeing that it just wasn’t happening. I wasn’t able to read.”
At that point, Double started taking special classes for her learning
disabilities. Things progressed well in the fourth and fifth grades. She
enjoyed the teachers and the learning environment. But early into her
junior high years, things did not work out as well and she changed to being
home-schooled. Double said at the time, home-schooling presented a better
learning atmosphere and she felt more comfortable. “Situations at the
school at that time were such that we figured home-schooling was a better
deal for Katie,” said her mom, Linda. In an odd set of circumstances,
being home-schooled also created the connection between Double and hockey.
She needed a physical education credit for her home-schooling program.
Hockey at the ESL Centre became available, and she quickly took to the
sport.
“Hockey became more appealing to me because it was, just like my schoolwork,
something I had to work hard at to get good at,” she said. “Hockey taught me
how to focus and that has in turn helped my schoolwork.” She returned
to Victor as a freshman but still found things difficult at first taking
regular classes. She even flunked Spanish. But she settled down, focus and
with the help and support of teachers and district officials, things began
to move in a positive direction.
“I have had great support from the school system now
with everybody helping me and loaning me a lot of support,” she said.
“Everyone has been very supportive of me getting to where I am.” Where
she is now is taking IB and Gemini classes and owning a 94 average that has
her ranked in the low 20s in her senior class at Victor High School.
Double also has a solid idea of where she would like to go to continue her
studies.
“I really like Cortland right now,” she said. “I think it would be a great
place for me to major in elementary special education. But I don’t know, we
will have to wait and see.”

Messenger Post Ron Wilson ******McQuaid
6, Victor 1
It wasn’t
McQuaid’s size advantage over Victor. It wasn’t the Knights’ better record or
higher seed over the Blue Devils. What led to No. 2 McQuaid’s 6-1 win over
No. 5 Victor in Sunday’s Section 5 Class B championship hockey game was the
Knights’ depth. Rotating four lines in and out of the 45-minute game at
the ESL Centre while the Blue Devils skated two lines, McQuaid hoped to
eventually wear down Victor. “We have played four lines all season,
reducing it a little bit in the playoffs,” said McQuaid coach Al Vyverberg. “Our
big game plan, which we do against a lot of teams, is to try to wear our
opponents down. We knew they played two lines and that playing three, sometimes
four, lines would wear them down. That’s what we were hoping to do. It’s
hard with two lines. I did it when I was in high school. It’s just very hard.
You have got to be in exceptional condition and have the mental fortitude and
the whole deal to make that work.”
Victor coach Mike Ferreri said his players, while being
relatively smaller, didn’t let size dictate the game. “I don’t really
think their size made that much difference because I thought our kids did a very
good job of being physical,” he said. “At the end of the first period, we talked
about matching up physically with them, and I think we did a good job of doing
that, the physical part of the game anyway. “Come the second period it
kind of frustrated them a bit and they started taking some penalties they
usually don’t take. So I think our boys did a good job at matching up to their
bigger size. Eventually, though, they wore us down.”
The Knights were led by both senior Nick Caton and junior
Brent Sanderson with two goals each. Caton and Sanderson, along with Sanderson’s
brother Blake, comprised a line that produced four goals. Brent Sanderson added
two assists while Caton added had one. Caton scored the first goal, 2:45
into the game. “I chipped it in past the defense and started skating as
hard as I could down the boards,” he said. “I knew the defender was going to
catch me, so I just put on the brakes, took a quick spin and, as I knew she
(Victor goalie Katie Double) was dropping early from watching their warmups, I
just turned and fired it up high over her left shoulder.” Brent Sanderson
and Mike Filice had assists on the goal which was the lone one of the first
period.
Victor continued to do a good job of keeping the Knights in
check in the second period with several penalties being called on both teams.
However, with 6:21 left, Caton scored his second goal on a scramble between five
skaters in front of Double. A little less then a minute later, Matt
Grabowski got the Blue Devils on the board with a power-play goal. “We
worked it down low and someone, I’m not quite sure who, worked it out front to
Mattie who was alone in front of the goal,” Ferreri said. “He threw it on net
and it trickled in.” Trickled in it did, rolling down the back of Knights’
goalie Ian Harris’ right leg and very slowly, while spinning, trickling over the
goal line. Assists were given to Vince Pettrone and Andrew Lane. With 1:06
left in the period, however, McQuaid struck again. “I think we were just
getting off a penalty and I took a shot that bounced off of somebody’s shin,”
said Brent Sanderson of his goal that made it 3-1. “It went to someone who ended
up shooting and missing. It came around the point and I slid in around to the
back door. No one on the Victor team saw that I was there. It just came to me
and I had the whole net to shoot on. I faked her left and went right.”
The Knights’ superior depth began to take its toll in the
third period as McQuaid scored three more goals, the first 1:15 in by sophomore
Woodruff Hudson. On the goal, Double was bowled over after being hit in the
midsection by on onrushing attacker. Gamely, she got up and gave it a go but 2
1/2 minutes later, Ferreri replaced her with sophomore Chris Butusov. “Her
ribs kind of got run into in the middle of the second period,” Ferreri said. “I
left it up to her whether she could go or not. She tried but eventually she
needed to come out.” The Knights then went on to cap their second straight
sectional title with goals by senior Bill Napoli and Brent Sanderson. Dugan and
Kelly Sloan had the assists on Napoli’s goal with Caton assisting on Sanderson’s
goal. Harris made 12 saves for McQuaid, while Double and Butusov combined
to make 24 saves for Victor. “They are a little bit deeper than us and
they are fast,” Ferreri said. “Probably one of the fastest, quickest teams we
have seen all year. We did a great job but they had just a little more speed
than us.”
“You know the scoreboard says 6-1, but the kids fought. I
thought it was a great effort. The season was great. I mean we started out at
1-8 so I don’t think many people counted on us to get to where we are. The
second half of the season the guys really came together. Last night at our team
dinner Nate (VanKouwenberg, assistant coach) and I were talking about how
everybody on our team seems to get along. They are all pulling in the same
direction and it showed. It showed just to be able to get here.” Grabowski
also had an upbeat attitude after the game. “We knew they were going to be
tough coming into it,” he said. “We knew they were real strong and that they
were deep. Basically we were just going to have to play our hearts out. I
thought we did but it just didn’t turn out in our best interest I guess.
“As the season, it started out kind of slow but eventually we started clicking.
It kicked in at the most important time, the sectionals, and we managed to win a
few games and make it to the championship. We had a good season. I’m not
disappointed at all.” Vyverberg was quite complimentary of Victor.
“They are young but I give them a lot of credit,” he said. “I really do. That’s
a hard-working team over there. I was really worried of their work ethic. That’s
why I was hollering at my guys. We needed to work on them. Try to wear them
down. They have a nice team.”
The Blue Devils ended the season at 10-13-2 while the Knights head into Western
Regional play with a 12-11-3 mark.

Blue Devils Ice Irish, earn spot
in title game.
Katie Double
has been around Victor hockey, it seems, forever. Playing Notre Dame of Batavia,
who upset top seed Canandaigua last Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the
Section 5 class B playoffs, Double, a senior in her last year at Victor, didn’t
want all those years of early morning and late afternoon practices to come to a
halt. To that end, Double went out and made 15 stops on 17 saves, combining with
a suddenly multi-faceted Blue Devil offense that saw four different skaters
score, leading Victor to a Class B semi-final 4-2 win over Notre Dame Tuesday
night at the ESL Sports Centre. Matt Mincin, Mike Domizio, Vince Pettrone, and
Matt Grabowski’s open-netter with seconds left in the game, supplied the scoring
for Victor.
Victor coach Mike Ferreri pointed to his goalie and goal
scorers in a post game interview. “Katie did a great job,” said Ferreri. “She
has been our starter for three years now. She is a senior and is very confident
out there. She played a great game tonight.” “Mikey Domizio, he just sort of
came alive in the second and third periods. He made a great move, threw the puck
on the net and look what happens with that big rebound there and he finishes.
We expect a lot of offense from Vince. He is one of our skill players. That
whole line -Mikey, Mattie, and Vinnie- they are kind of our go-to-line
offensively.” Ferreri knows of what he talks about as that line was responsible
for three of the Blue Devils goals. At the drop of the puck, the Blue Devils
came out skating, forcing the Fighting Irish into icing the puck three times in
the games first two minutes. But behind some nice saves from ND freshman goalie
Tom Dehr, no goals were scored until, on a Victor penalty, Beau Richter fired a
hard shot from about 25 feet out which Double made the initial save on but could
not coral the rebound. With 4:30 left in the first quarter, sophomore Ivan
Maddafferi pounced on the rebound and slid it past Double for the games first
score.
The second period was all Victor. Rallying behind a defense
that kept the puck in their own offensive end, the Blue Devils buzzed around the
Fighting Irish’s net. They had several nice shots, but Dehr was equal to the
Blue Devil challenge early. However, with the Blue Devil pressure, it was only a
matter of time before they, specifically Mincin, found the back of the ND net,
deflecting a ripper of a shot from the right side blue line by Trevor O’Shea.
Victor (10-14-2) then took the lead on Domizio’s rush from the right-side blue
line that Ferreri had referred to earlier. “It all started out with Vince
Pettrone crushing the kid at the blue line,” said Domizio. “I had some stride
and I came across the blue line and it fell right to my stick and I just had a
full steam ahead of me. I got by one kid, shot the puck. The rebound came out
and I got it again.”
Up 2-1 after the second period, Victor again had a penalty
cost them as, with eight minutes and 50 seconds left in the game, the Irish
scored on a nice pass play from Chris Cavanaugh, to Maddafferi, to Jason
Harasimowicz who scored on the play to tie the game at two. Three minutes later,
Victor scored the eventual game-winner, a power play goal with nine seconds left
in the penalty. Again it was the, ‘Mikey, Mattie, Vinnie line,’ with all three
poking and banging for the loose puck in front of Dehr. Pettrone, after a battle
with his teammates and Dehr, finally shoved the puck under the Irish goalie for
the score. Grabowski then put the icing on the Blue Devil cake, scoring the
empty netter on a nice pass around the boards from Portland that found him with
just one move to make before he calmly and deliberately slid the puck into the
open Irish goal as he slowly skated across the crease.
Domizio, after the game, was still amped about the way his
team played. “The flow was amazing,” he said. “It was awesome. Passes connecting
to each other. Shots on goal. Going for the rebounds. It was just a great game
for us.” “We didn’t do too many things different,” explained Ferreri of his
game plan. “We knew we had to shut down Chris Cavanaugh. He is a very good
player and we really needed to shut him down. The other thing we needed to do
was to stay out of the penalty box. We have a little bit more depth then they
do, but if you are in the box it tends to put you behind the eight ball. We did
that OK. I mean, we took a couple of penalties that we shouldn’t have and they
scored two power play goals. That was kind of their answer. They did a great job
on the power plays. Double agreed with her coach. “Our defense in front of me
did great,” she said. “Especially Matt Portland in the second, when he cleared
the puck from out in front after it hit the post. That was close. I just don’t
want the season to be over. I want to keep going. Going to practices.”
Victor will play McQuaid, who defeated Geneva-Waterloo 4-2 in the other Class B
semi-final, Sunday afternoon, 2 p.m. at the ESL Center in the finals.

Sweet Senior Night rally for Blue
Devils
The Victor
hockey team, stuck in third place in the Monroe County North/South League, still
managed to put their fingerprints on the division race Tuesday night.
Fighting back from a trio of one goal deficits at the Thomas Creek Ice Arena,
the Blue Devils pulled out a 3-3 tie against rival and league-leading
Canandaigua. Second place Geneva-Waterloo won on Tuesday night so
the Panthers are back to within striking distance of Canandaigua. Both
teams will attempt to keep their records clean until next Friday's showdown in
Canandaigua.
Meanwhile,
Tuesday night, the Blue Devils' Mike Domizio scored the tying goal with a little
over eight minutes remaining. Victor then left it up to senior goalie
Katie Double and a stingy defense to hold the Braves' multifaceted offense
in check and preserve the tie. Victor coach Mike Ferreri explained the
game-tying goal: "Somebody dumped the puck in deep into their zone and
Matt Grabowski went in and fought hard for the puck, throwing it out to Vince
Pettrone, who made a perfect backhand pass to Mikey Domizio on a real nice move,
Mikey just hit a hard one-timer into the net. The play was set up by the
hard work of Matt to get the puck out."
Grabowski led
Victor with two goals while Christian Phelps and Evan Roth led CA with a goal
and an assist each. CA's C. J. Roberts got the Braves on the scoreboard
first scoring off assists from Kolby Erb and Ryan Cronin. Grabowski scored
his first goal in the second period to tie it at 1-1 off assists from
Christopher Roeder and Matt Portland. A little over a minute and a half
later CA's Phelps put the Braves back up 2-1 on assists from Roth and Mark
Greer. Grabowski again drew the Blue Devils even, scoring off an assist
from Domizio. Then Roth, as he had done in the Brave's key win over
Geneva/Waterloo last week, put the Braves back in front 3-2, in the third
period, scoring off assists from Phelps and Conrad Saxby. That was before
Domizio, Pettrone and Grabowski spun their magic on the game's last goal.
Double, a
senior, ended up with 25 saves and talked enthusiastically about her teammates.
"Matt did a great job scoring those two goals tonight," she said. "And
Mike did a great job also. It was a great game for the seniors. All
the seniors did a great job." Grabowski also talked about the seniors'
involvement in the win. "It was a battle out there," he said. "Before the
game, we all got together. As seniors we were pumped up because of this
being the last game against Canandaigua for most of us." He then went on
to talk about the tying goal. "It was textbook," he said with a laugh.
"Pretty goal. Our line had been moving the puck well for most of the game

Doug Tay
is playing his first year of varsity hockey with the Victor Blue Devils, but it
didn't come easily. A junior now, he was cut during his freshman and
sophomore years. His love of the game kept him coming back, and his hard
work and determination paid off, landing him a spot on this year's squad.
"I just like the excitement of the game and being part of it.," Tay said.
I've been playing for about seven years. I would watch it on TV and liked
it mainly because of the speed of the game, and the checking and big hits."
Tay also plays soccer. He is a fullback on the varsity team in the fall,
when he finds the outdoor practice refreshing compared to indoors at the hockey
rink.
Tay is taking
AP History, Physics and Pre-Calculus, as well as English and Psychology this
year, with English being his favorite. "I like English because I like to
write and I'm thinking along the lines of journalism or being a teacher," said
Tay, adding that psychology also interests him. "I've heard good reviews
about the class from other people, and I like to learn about the thought
processes and what influences people to think the way they do." Tay also
has taken on a leadership role for his class, and is serving a role that has
become a staple in his academic career. "I'm the president of the junior
class' student council, and I've been the president since eighth grade," he
said. " We organize community service projects like food drives and plan
school events like homecoming and the prom. "I like being thought of as a
leader in my class because I like to listen to what they think, and incorporate
their ideas and let them get involved." Under Tay's guidance, the junior
class has set up numerous fundraisers for different groups, including selling
T-shirts to support groups like Lollypop Farm in Fairport and for Breast Cancer
Awareness.
Tay said a
typical school day begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends somewhere around 6:30 p.m. when
he gets home from hockey practice. He then relaxes by watching television
before he tackles homework for the night. Some nights he plays in a soccer
league unaffiliated with school, as well as helping his father, Jeff, with a
youth soccer league. In the summer he has worked as a soccer referee,
though this summer he plans to apply for a position in the Victor Summer
Recreation Program. Another group Tay involves himself with is the
International Club, which helps exchange students adjust to American life by way
several social activities, and while he has not hosted a student yet, he said he
would like to. There are six international students at Victor this year,
ranging from China to Germany. He said his favorite culture lesson
came from China, learning about the Chinese New Year symbols and animals.
"We do different activities like midnight bowling and ice skating," Tay
explained "We do these things to help the students learn about our
culture, but also to learn about theirs."

Double made 24 saves while Spencerport's Tyler Lariviere made 19 stops.
The shutout was especially clutch for Double as Victor had to withstand a

made some fantastic saves. This definitely was a battle and I felt that we
probably played as close to a complete game as we have played so far this year."

4, Bishop Kearney 3
The
Victor hockey team looking for its first win of the season, had a three goal
lead over Bishop Kearney in a Section 5 North-South Division game Tuesday night. Senior
Christian Gunn paced the Blue Devils to the advantage with a pair of goals, but
it was teammate Chris Butusov who made key saves in the nets in the waning
minutes to preserve what turned into a nail-biting 4-3 win.
"We had three
penalties against us late in the game and we killed off two of them" Victor
Coach Mike Ferreri said. "And then we killed a fourth one with four
minutes left in the game. Chris made some great saves in the last four
minutes to help save the win for us." Butusov, a
sophomore, had 30 saves in the game, but he preferred to credit the defense in
front of him. "I thought that a lot of those shots were blocked by the
team" he said. "And a lot of the saves I made were not quality shots due to our
defense."
Gunn's first
goal was off a rebound from a shot by Matt Mincin. His second was off a
deft Matt Grabowski pass. "It was a perfect pass from Matt that was right
on my stick," Gunn said. "He put it on my stick, and I rifled it to the
upper right hand corner." Also scoring
for Victor were Grabowski and Chris Roeder. Roeder's goal with nine
minutes left in the game proved to be the game-winner. John Crean, Mincin
and Bryan Kavanaugh each had assists. It was the
first win for Victor this year and both Gunn and Butusov thought the team could
build off it. "It's a positive thing," Gunn said. "It's got that
good feeling working for us. We just have to keep that feeling rolling
now." "Our team was pretty pumped up after the game, said Butusov.
We just have not been able to get the breaks. Hopefully we can use this
heading into our game Friday night against Canandaigua."
Chris Brady
scored twice for B-K with Alex Austin scoring the third. "This has been a
long time coming," said Ferreri. "The kids have been working hard and it's
exciting to see them get the win. Let's hope it continues to Friday at
Canandaigua."
